Rotary Club of Accra West Charter Presentation

Our Inception

The Rotary Club of Accra West was admitted to membership of Rotary International on February 5th, 1969. Unlike most new Rotary Clubs, Accra West began significantly with nearly half of its founding membership comprising experienced Rotarians.

Originally dubbed a "Miniature United Nations" due to having 18 expatriate members out of 22 charter members, the club evolved over time, registering a majority of Ghanaian members by 1976.

Milestones & Historical Timeline

1967

At the first West African Rotary Convention in Accra, RI Vice President Steve O'Halloran recommended releasing part of Accra Club's territory to form a new club due to its large membership of 200.

October 1968

Rotary Club of Accra officially released territory for the new club to be formed.

December 1968

The Board of Rotary International officially approved the territorial limits of the Accra Club.

7th January 1969

Standard Club Constitution was approved with territorial limits defined west of Nsawam Road through Liberty Avenue and Lutterodt Street straight to the sea.

13th January 1969

Election of first officers took place. Rot. Dr. J. K. M. Quartey was elected Charter President. Meetings set for Wednesdays at Kob Lodge, Ring Road.

20th January 1969

Application forwarded to Administrative Adviser Rot. Joe Richards (Rotary Club of Monrovia) for onward transmission to R.I.

5th February 1969

Official Admission: The Rotary Club of Accra-West was officially admitted to membership of Rotary International.

20th February 1969

Rotary International President Kiyoshi Togasaki personally congratulated each of the charter members of the club.

25th April 1969

Rotary Club of Accra presented the official Charter to Rotary Club of Accra West at the Bukom Night Club of the Continental Hotel, Accra.
